Pedders installed....now I have a clunking noise!
So I had a set of Pedders spring and an OTTP hardcore rear sway bar proffesionaly installed on my 2010 HHR SS 5 speed at a Pedders dealer about a week ago. I am happy with the ride and stance, but now I have a clunking sound coming from the passenger side rear of the car over bigger bumps but not all (note..the oem springs did not produce any clunking noise and the car only has 7000 miles). I took the car back to the shop for trouble shooting and this is where I am at. The noise happened with the sway bar off so it is not the bar, The shop put in two new pedders springs in the rear but now the clunking is worse and happens over most bumps. The tech told me he was out of ideas for fixing the noise. Needless to say I am not happy with that. I am taking the car in to the shop one last time this Friday to have my original rear pedders put back on. I was told to bring my oem springs so they could put them on to see what might be happening (again this never happened with the oem springs) The manager of the shop even spoke with Pete at Pedders and he also had no idea.
If anyone has any suggestions or insight as to what might be happening, please let me know. Any comments or suggestions are welcomed as I am frustrated at this point and considering returning the Pedders springs and returning to the stock oem springs. Thanks in advance, Miltown SS |
Personally I didn't like the bouncy ride with the pedders. But when we stuck them in one made that noise, We flipped it and the noise stopped they don't come with instructions but there is a right end up on the rears.

They might have installed them upside down.. it might be coilbind that youre hearing.. take a picture of that side with the car on the ground and post

Here are some pics (taken on cell phone). You wouldn't think a pro shop would install them upside down, but who knows.

X 3, you've got one installed upside down, there is top and a bottom to any spring. Really surprised that Pedders doesn't indicate the proper orientation or provide instructions.

I'm pretty sure the spring is tapered, as in the gauging of the steel. I'm almost sure the thickest part goes toward the top.
This is how they are progressive rate. |
Ill look at the pic when i get home my work blocks it.... tell them to swap the clunking spring to flip it
|
Looking at your pics, thats how mine are installed and I have no issues
|
Yeah i just saw the pic and they look normal

http://hphotos-sjc1.fbcdn.net/hs310...._8133035_n.jpg the spring is beehive shaped....the pointy end is the top. If you set it on the ground you will also see that they have a "lean" to them.....they should be installed with pointy end up and leaning towards front of car My car with Pedders: (Bump Stops are slightly trimmed here) http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/w...g?t=1289627006 http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/w...g?t=1289627073 Maybe they goofed with this one corner. |
If you don't have faith in people on here, just go to Pedders forum. they monitor that religiously and respond very quickly to inquiries on there

That link that Nacademus put up is very good as far as resources go.

Thanks to everybody for the advice and comments. I will be passing along some of the insights provided here to the tech:twothumbs: Hopefully this issue will be resolved tomorrow once and for all.:fixcar: I am waiting for approval to post on the Pedders forum so I guess that won't help before tommorrow. If anyone else has any ideas or wants to comment please do so.
