The SS is synthetic from the factory (Mobil 1) so you want to stick with synthetic in that car. I'm using Pennzoil Synthetic in my 2.4L 2LT and it's great!

The chevy dealer that I have my ss serviced at will not allow anything but Mobil 1 for the SS.

No, they put a Mobil 1 oil cap on the SS. You aren't supposed to use anything but Synthetic. (Don't have to use Mobil 1 though...)

I use Mobil 1 in my '06 1LT anyways...

Howdy, Welcome to the forum, SS motors work hard well mine does any way full synthetic is the best protection I'll probably add a quart of Lucas synthetic additive next change for a little extra protection.

That seem to be a subject for debate The meter can last even longer than that depending on your driving habits. When mine said 25% left I had about 5,000 on it but was appalled at what came out of it either the dealer didn't change it or it needs to be changed sooner it was ugly I'm going to run 3000 on this one and change it again to get it cleaned up to my liking. We will see what comes out then, and I'll have a better idea how long to go. My BMW goes 7,000 and its a little brown but nothing like what came out of the HHR.

In the manual it list which oils are "gm aproved" for the car. There is a seal that needs to be on it for it to be. So yes others besides Mobil 1 can be used but you just have to check. For the SS though you want to stay with synthetic.

To answer your question simply.....

EVERYONE who owns a SS, uses synthetic oil. TO MAINTAIN YOUR DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY YOU MUST USE SYNTHETIC OIL THAT MEETS THE GM SPECIFICATION (which , if you read thru your Owner's Manual, provides the same information).

Have no concerns about warranty.....use whatever you wish. It's your car.
