I have been a user of synthetic oil long before I got my HHR SS. But when it comes to my SS I use Amsoil Signature Series 0-30 Full synthetic. I used to put it in my GTO too.

This is from their website - so I knew it would meet GM's spec requirements.

AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for use in gasoline engines, diesel engines (API CF, ACEA B5) and other applications requiring SAE 0W-30, 5W-30 or 10W-30 with the following worldwide specifications:

• API SM/CF, SL, SJ …
• ILSAC GF-4, 3 …
• ACEA A5/B5-04
• GM 4718M, 6094M
• Ford WSS-M2C929-A
• Honda HTO-06
• Daimler Chrysler MS-6395N
• VW 503.00

No matter what synthetic oil you use it needs to meet or exceed GM 4718M. If you have an engine problem down the road, GM may not do the warranty work if you didn't use oil that meets their standards.

Tell them to shut up, and read your manual. Personally I would just highlight where it says to use the DIC for however long on your oil change and shove it in there face, but I am a bit angry at my local dealership right now. I am almost 10k on this oil and still have almots 30% left on the DIC.

In my automotive classes we're learning that if you drive under heavy conditions (short trips, towing, police, taxi) to change every 3k miles. If you just drive regularly, then 7k. This is straight out of the book, which says it's recommended from the manufacturers.
