The procedure is in your Owner Manual. Yes, you do have to do it when you rotate.

The OPs car is a 2006 without TPMS.

TPMS exists because 95% of drivers are totally oblivious to the fact tires can leak air. If you are not one of them there is no harm in ignoring the tell-tale light. But, ignoring the state of your tires can result in death or injury.

Oops, Donbrew. I definitely missed that about the wheels not having the TPMS. for the OP, I purchased sensors from Rock Auto for under $30 each. Sure you will have the cost of busting the tires down and remounting and balancing, but I think it's worth it to be able to receive warning if a tire pressure gets low.

It's programmed for overall height, not wheel size.

circumference of the tire, actually. Which determines the number of revolution per mile. Basically the same thing as height to anybody that wasn't feeling nit picky.

Well I talked to my mechanic and he said it can be done as everyone has said, but he is concerned that because I will have a 17" rim on a car that had 16" (and with sensors) that it could mess with the sensors and cause the ABS light to come on. He had a GM truck come in where someone had done the same think I was wanting to do and because of the wheel size difference it was not playing nice with the other sensors. They traced the problem back to the TPS. He said that may or may not happen, just won't know until all the changes are made.

People change wheels and tires all the time, without setting the ABS light. If the problem was traced back to the throttle position sensor, then it had nothing to do with overall tire size.

He thinks your car is a PT Cruiser. The TPM system works on tire pressure and has nothing to do with the ABS. The ABS system does care about rotation speed, but as long as all the tires rotate at the same speed (same size) it does not care. Don't put 16 inches on the front and 17 inches on the rear, then you will have problems.

As long as all 4 tires are the same size there is no problem with ABS. There will be the aforementioned odometer problem. If you are not one of us folks that tests the radar by a MPH or 2 that should not make a difference.

In short: your guy is believing something that somebody thought he heard from a guy that was walking down the street talking about the ham sandwich his brother-in-law said he bought from this other guy that once drove a car that had a flat tire and...........
