Theres lots of feedback on this if you search the forums. The most accepted width is 225, just a little wider than stock and no clearance issues. Most say 235 will work well too.
Are the cobalt wheels 17" from the 2.4ss or 18" from the ss/sc? If they are the 18" I would go for 235/40/18 if you like wide tires as long as you dont drive through mud or snow with them.

Thank you for the information, I was thinking maybe 245/40/18 or 255/40/18 would 255/40/18 be too wide for this vehicle

thanks

I still have stock, so Im going off of what others have posted here. There are many threads if you do a search. I will be going for 235/40/18, it should be close to stock circumference and good for clearance all around.
The front has wider clearance than the rear, but the front struts will restrict the tire height. 255/40 might not make it.
We are using a 245/30/20 on a 20x8.5 wheel and you can see how close the top of the tire is to the bottom of the strut. Tire works out fine, no rubbing when turning left to right or under hard cornering. Good luck.

Just Curious if You Plan On Lowering Your Ride ? If Not I Would Consider a 225 x 45 x 18 to Help Get Rid of the Wheel Well Gap !
(the above size also looks Good lowered to!)

Personally the 235 x 40 x 18 is a Great Size if You Will Be Lowering Your Panel but if Staying Stock Heidth will Look Strange with the "LARGE" Gaps !

Here's a Great Tire Size Comparison Chart for Ya:

Good Luck ,

Good Luck ,
Considering the differance in overall diameter between a 225/45R18 & a 235/40R18 is only .57'. And only half of that shows at the top, .285", I think calling it a "LARGE" gap is a little off.....

Personal Preference for Us Would Be to Give Up Some Width and Close Up the "LARGE" Factory Heidth Gaps with a Taller Sidewall Tire to Enhance the Side View of the Vehicle ! On Your Vehicle (In Which I Really Like) the Wheels You Purchased Had Tires on them Sized at 225 x 40 x 18's ! For Us the Gaps Can Be Reduced with the Same Tire in a 45 Series ! I Think the Majority of Owners Prefer a Smaller Wheel Well Opening than what GM Offers ! In This Scenario "Smaller" (GAPS) is Better (Personally), No Matter How Slight !

I have already planned to go with a 235/40 when I need tires. But the 225/40's that came with mine still have lots of tread left. The 235/40 is only .09" taller than my stock 215/55R16's. So the speedo differance is only off by .36%.

The 225/45 is .66" taller and takes the speedo off by 2.6%. Granted not much in either case, but I'd rather have the speedo as close as possible.

I'm not concerened about 1/4"-1/2" diffence in fender gap. My lowering days are long over. Plus my driveway would kill it....

Personally I don't know what all the hype is about putting Cobalt Wheels on an HHR?? There is nothing fancy about them to me, they're a rather plain factory wheel. I guess more people like them than I thought, but I'd rather go aftermarket. I think I may put my Wheel Vintique ralley's on

Value, Plus they are close looking to the stock polished, but just a little different. Can be had in 17" or 18". Don't have to worry about fitment or backspacing issues.

It's a lot easier to spend $50 on a set of wheels/tires verses $1000.....
