Gettin' the chrome off

Has any body tried to get the factory plastic chrome off HHR wheels

I imagine media blasting or chemical etching would be the most effective, something that will work on at least the nickel layer and not damage the plastic under the copper layer, and not pit or mar the aluminum of the rest of the wheel.

If you want to paint them, maybe a self-etching primer would work best.
