powdercoated rims and lug nuts
powdercoated rims and lug nuts
To those who have powdercoated their rims, I have a question on how to install the lugs without them chipping up the holes.
I had my winter setup powdercoated and when i install the lug nuts, the paint is chipping like crazy and moisture getting behind the paint the wheel looks like **** now.
I heard something in the past about using washers behind the lugs so it doesnt scratch up the paint? is this true? any other tips?
my gf is wanting to get her rims done but i dont want this to happen to her set.
thanks

When I had my old trucks rims powder coated ( yes red! of course ) they taped off the lug nut contact area for each of the twenty lug holes , they never chipped
The red powder coated WV I have are chipping a little at each lug nut contact point but the moons cover it.
As for washers , no don't do it

If you don't tape off the lug contact area when painting, then you should at least sand that area back to bare before installation and tightening lug nuts.
Skyline. Just consider it a lesson learned with your rims.
Now go ahead and get the Gf's painted. Just follow the prep advice above and you should be OK with her rims.
Fwiw. Putting 100lbs of torque when tightening the lugnuts,,,,hardly any painted surface will survive that.

Never use washers - that's asking for disaster (hummm I've never seen tapered washers except in limited electronic cabinet applications). Tape off the stud holes as noted above is the answer, or sand them out as noted.

If you have an old oven that the wheel can fit in you can buy this and do it yourself:
Hotcoat Deluxe Powder Coat Kit ? Eastwood Powder Coating Kits - Powder Coating Spray Gun

Should i remove the wheel weights as well? The rims have the metal clip-on ones and also the sticky ones.
If i remove them, can the metal clip-on ones be replaced with all the stick-on style?

Remove everything the rims need to be stripped down the bare metal , I sandblasted my steel rims.
After to balance the wheels , I had the tire shop use stick on tape weights on the inside of the wheel and the shortest valve stems they had!
