Number one cause was fluid spilled into shifter.

[QUOTE=Harpozep;163007]Oh yeah, common problem.

But no really, there is a fix for it a bulletin was issued and a lot of us have had the car transmission interlock replaced under warranty.
Here is the other thread with info on the topic.

Chevy replaced the shifter mechanism on ours to fix the problem, but that was a few years ago when the Extended Warranty was still in effect!

I had to take mine to a dealer because I pulled up to work and it wouldn't turn off. It was a special coverage thing so it didn't cost me anything but time.

fixed

I was having the same problem but thanks to this forum I was able to find online at advanced auto a repair kit for the shifter interlock. repaired myself thanks all. Cost for the repair kit $22 versus $130 for whole shifter assembly. Thanks everyone

Thumbs down Important follow up keys

This is a GREAT tip, and saved me from having me lights on all, night, and probably a dead battery in the morning. I am still "fingering" my car to get the ignition key out.

Key update: The dealer I had the ignition recall done at, said NO recall, NO warranty, NO safety issue, we know of the problem. $300 to fixit.

I called main chevy USA, talked for a while, they hooked me up with another nearby dealer, who said "it is most likely the car will be fixed for free, Chevy has the transmission issue right here. Bring your car in, no charge to look at it. If it is the issue, we will get parts and fix it for FREE".

Don't just sigh after calling your local dealer, do some research!!

I had my ignition replaced because of the recall over a year ago and now my key is getting stuck again. Only way to remove the key is to push the spring underneath the steering column trick. I'm done with my 2006 HHR. It's finally showing it's age. I might still take it to the dealership one more time but if they are going to charge me to fix it then I'll either trade it in or sell it for a new Chevy Trax.

Read the link in Donbrews post diretly above yours - stuck keys are addressed by a warranty (not a recall). Your dealer should handle it at no charge to you.

bogus dealers

Got an appointment at another Chevy dealer - they looked at it for free and said $598 plus tax to replace the shifter. No coverage at all.

Just working it around it still..maybe now I moved I'll try a dealer here in upstate NY - NJ ones were no help at all.

Private mechanic confirmed it should only be 300 dollars for parts and labour. I did NOT have him do it, it is just a key thing no shifting issues.
