Okay, I haven't really followed anything on this intake. It puts the filter in the engine bay with no heat shield so I was not interested.

 

And this one looks the same, I see no shield........

 

Well, you are half right. There is no shield that comes with the intake. As I quote from the website "Draws cool air from outside of engine compartment". So while the intake does not come with it's own heat shield, it does have a barrier from the engine compartment greatly reducing the temperature of the air that enters the filter.

 

Here is a statement from CGS regarding the SS Intake. Please direct any inquiries to CGS directly:

"This e-mail is to inform you that at this time the HHR SS intake system (part# 21155) is being discontinued until further notice. We at CGS have done numerous test on vehicles here in our shop and the intake system works great but for some reason we have been getting people across the US stating that their check engine light is coming on after installation of our intake system. So at this time we are discontinuing that part#. Thanks for understanding.

P.S. If you have any customers that are still interested in this we do have some in stock and we will only sell them " As Is" and No Return or Refund. CGS takes no responsibility for anything that may happen by the installation of this intake system

 

one other big difference i'm seeing between the HRC and CGS intakes, the CGS went across the top of the engine before zigzagging back to the front side, while the HRC stays along the leading edge (not directly above where the heat is rising) and then drops down in front. may make a little difference...straighter airflow, and less exposure to rising heat. just brainstorming here

 

A few HHR Newbie questions here, so apologies in advance.

1. Where exactly is the air filter located? From the pictures it looks like its somewhere in the lower part of the engine bay. ??

2. How high off the ground is the filter and is it somewhat protected from the elements? Since i'm in Canada we have to deal with snow/slush for four or five months of the year.

3. I have heard that the K&N filters (or more specifically the oil on them) will cause the check engine light to come on. Anyone have any insight here?

Re 1 & 2... it's right on top of the engine in that giant plastic box that says Ecotec Turbo.

i think he was asking about the CoolRam intake, not the stock one.

JB, the CoolRam filter is on the end of the piping in the picture, down kinda on the side of the engine, towards the lower end. as far as protection from the elements, i really don't know. i would say to message EcoBoost on here, as he is the one who makes them.

 

i just looked up his post about his IC and such, and EcoBoost is showing Supporting Vendor status under his name. perhaps you should discuss a GB with him...i just might want to get in on one of those for the CoolRam too
