A Trifecta Tune will do lots more HP than the Chip.

Since the $379 price includes the handheld tuner and they show a pretty big power gain on their website that sounds like a great deal. Especially if you can flash it back to stock when you go in for service. I sent them an email to see if it has the ability to flash it back to stock.

i wonder if it alters shift points, it does for some cars.

Flashing it back wont help. It's in the history and if found by a Chevrolet store warranty could be denied if it relates to the tune.

wow it is either pay more, get a stage upgrade that usually results in lots of issues or get an aftermarket tune for less money that is reliable but voids your warranty lol.

pretty crappy choices.

What do you mean by 'lots of issues' with the GM upgrade?? From everything I have read on the forum it is a great upgrade and makes the HHR a blast to drive? There was an issue with the installation docs on the first kits that went out but since that has been fixed it sounds like the most recent upgrades have gone smoothly. It may be slightly more than a few (but not all) of the after market tunes but you do get the full warranty with it. Besides, there has been support on the forums directly from people at GM involved with the upgrade and also some of the service people from the dealers. How is that bad?

Personally I would highly question that an aftermarket tune would be 'more reliable' than the one from the factory. Do the aftermarket ones account for the different configuration of the HHR SS?? How about and Automatic based SS with and without the Vacuum pump upgrade?? Unless they account for those I would expect more trouble from some random tune than ones that were tested for each configuration out there.

you may want to do a few searches in the HHR SS and 2.0 performance sections.
