Got the dreaded P0016 code

08 HHR LT, 2.2L. 144,000 miles. Got out my Solus and checked code P0016, crank & cam sensor failed. Replaced both, changed oil and car just kept running bad until it won't start now. What is the suggested next step?? Replace timing chain??? Thanks, Muddie

Yes, order a timing chain kit and replace

Per

https://www.obd-codes.com/p0016

The timing chain may have skipped a link there could be valve and or piston damage

Welcome!

Who advised you to kill the "messenger" not the "problem"? That code tells you that the sensors are working correctly and are reporting a timing problem.

Oh and BTW, now you have a new code because you did not relearn the new crankshaft sensor. Your Solus may be capable of that, but I know a Tech2 will. Probably, P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction, it does not mean anything needs replacing.

more question on timing chain

Thank you Old Blue and donbrew for answering my post. I'm just a young lady who borrowed her brother's solus on the sly to find the answers to my HHr problems and not have my SIX brothers taking over my project..lol. So now I'm into replacing the timing chain, balance chain and water pump. Everything was going great until I was replacing the sprockets on the balance shafts. Exhaust went great, onto intake when as I was tightening the bolt up the corner of the "clip" busted off (see picName: Balance shaft clip.jpg

That is the balance shaft retainer, if it's holding the shaft in place you should be fine!

Or you could buy a new one from a GM dealer.

I can't see the broken bit. Most don't bother replacing the balance chain sprockets.

Those are not the cam shaft sprockets! The book says not to remove the sprocket bolts, the shaft and sprocket is an assembly.

The other chain is the camshaft chain.

You're saying that the intake broke, but the sprocket pictured clearly says "exhaust". Like donbrew posted from the repair manual, make sure you haven't swapped their positions, intake and exhaust.

I just used a pic off the web as an example...I busted the entire corner off, so nothing is securing the shaft. Will head to the dealership monday. Thanks again guys!!!
