Red face A little more pep, and quicker idle downs?

This is my first four-cyl affection so I'm slowly tinkering on it trying to give it a little more pep, I'm not worried about any serious power right now, when I am I'm gonna boost (super more than likely) but for now I want to stay simple, I'd like a little more power and the elimnation of my top-end fuel cut-off. I also noticed that it takes my 2.2 5/spd like 30sec. to Idle down no matter what I'm doing whether it be standing still or cruisin and I decide to coast it, I've been around carburated 8cyl.s since I was a kid and in that discipline a balanced engine Idles down as quick as it revs, Just curious why and if it can be supplemented. I've been told though(not by any ecotec experienced) that I can get my fix by getting a good performane tune, and Then I'm told to go with an underdrive pulley and a lightened crankshaft pulley, or a full 2.5inch exhaust and a cold air intake. I have taken interest in all of these options but I don't want to make a move unless there is a significant gain to be had. Currently I have a cobbled together short ram because that pretty little air-filter box was unsecured and had a 3inch hole right in front of the MAF. If there's any help out there for me, I would be greatly thankfully to any who can share there wisdom.

i would stay away from the pulleys personally, a lot of the ones i have read about (except for MD HHRs) have been known to eat your oil pump. i would say get your cat back, a intake(the 2.4 intake manifold could be an option as well). and a tune. that might be the pep you are looking for. prolly would net about 15 hp in my pinion

Sounds good to me, is there any suggestion as far as exhaust size etc, I would like to have me stock manifold P&P'd rumor is that it has the same gains as those spaghetti headers, then I'd like yo go 2&1/4 or 2&1/2 with a high flow and like a 40series flowmaster, I want a single in dual out and I'm gonna dump in front of my wheels with a set of rectangle tips, I'm willing to redesign a bit but I want to keep the dump spot at the sides

The slow idle-down is part of the emissions controls. The engine runs hot and holds revs to keep temps up, which burns off more pollutants. Maybe a tune would help that some.

Also, a 40-series flowmaster is going to sound like ass on this vehicle. The 40-series is really made for large displacement engines... V8s and the like. You need something built and tuned for a 4-cyl or you are going to have a nasty raspy sound. Check out a magnaflow or borla with a resonator... those sound decent.

I'm sorry guys I gave you the wrong one, I just picked up a pair of 40's for my 406 S-10, I meant the 80series, one of my buddies has on on his Nissan Hard Body, it has a real nice tone, kinda gives it that high end exotic sound

Will the 80 series even fit on a HHR?

I am open to suggestion but I want to go with a chamber muffler, I want mild decibles but an aggresive tone and, like I said, I'm gonna jump my pipe size to 2.5 and I can do my own fab to make the casing fit, like I said I'm only new to the four banger game.
