"Mods to come:
1: tranny chip to improve shifts on my automatic"

Answer: Just put it in "I" gear - you will see a big improvement in firmness and response.

You're welcome!

Can you explain the "I" Gear and how it works for us dumb drivers?

"I" gear is the position below "D" on HHR automatics. "I" stands for "Intermediate" gear. Unlike the "2" position on conventional automatics, "I" gear uses a different programming for the entire transmission range.

Upon acelleration, the car remains in 2nd until 42mph, and provides much firmer and "spirited" shifting, during decelleration. The car also remains in 3rd until 38mph, allowing improved engine braking. This can greatly enhance the driving experience for those who miss the exhilaration of driving a stick. Try it - you'll like it.

"I" gear was designed to help slow the car on long downgrades - similar to downshifting a standard trans. which can help prolong brake component life.

While in "I" gear, the HHR will into shift into 4th, but remains in 3rd. You can actually bypass the 108mph limiter by downshifting into "I" gear and flooring it - but this is not recommended. If you should try it, make sure you are a professional driver on a closed course, not on public roadways.

The HHR transmission uses "smart logic" in that it will only downshift 1 gear at a time when manually forced to do so. This means you can be driving 60mph on the highway and slam the shifter into Low (not recommended!), and the transmission will only allow downshifting to a safe limit. If you manually place the shift lever into 1st gear at a high speed, the trans will not downshift there until a safe speed has been reached (under 25mph).

Example: Driving at 60mph in "D" - if you move the shifter down to "I" the trans will shift to 3rd. Moving it again down into the "L" position will only net a shift to 2nd, thereby preventing any damage from abuse. It is a great protective system.

Try driving in "I" gear around town - accelerating during stop-n-go driving. You will notice the "tightened" shifting and sporty response. Coming into a turn "too hot" - drop into "I" and the car will downshift, giving you better control.

reminder: Always remember to place the shifter back into "D" when entering highways; otherwise you will be cruising in 3rd, and get reduced mileage.

Hope it helps,

I love the "I" setting for driving quickly. It sets all the shift points up. It also will make downshifts for engine braking all on its own. It keeps the car in the power band better. It is invaluable in the mountains where it seems to be the only way not to cook the undersized brakes. It will use more fuel however.

Gotta jump in .............

I love "I" gear, still use it once in a while, but the shift point changes done with my tune by Tune Time made a HUGE difference. They took out the 108mph limiter, plus when I get it to about 115mph and the rpm's are about 6200, it shifts and the rpm's drop to about 5500!! I did't try to see how much faster I could go, wife was with me and all. I will find out s=on one of my road trips this summer though.

So yeah, "I" drive is very cool but a tune is MUCH better.

How are they "tuning" the 2.2 ecm and pcm. If I remember correctly it is a *****, and even HPTuners would mess with it.

The original computer software for the 2.2 in 06 still has no tuning available from anyone. IF "Tune Tyme" is able to tune a 06 2.2 then this would be the first anyone has heard of it. Not saying it isn't possible just VERY unlikely! This tune for the 2.2 sounds like it would be for the 07+ 2.2's.
