Smile Turbo on a 2.2 HHR

I recently purchased a Turbo for my 2.2 HHR and was wondering where the oil lines connect, included with the turbo there will be 2 oil lines used originaly for a cobalt.

Just wondering if the oil hook up will be the same for the HHR 2.2

I dont mean to offend or discourage you, but it sounds like you might be over your head on this job. Finding a place for tapping and running the oil lines is only a very small part of doing a turbo retro fitting. I doubt it would be the same as on the 2.0 engine.

Smile HHR oil line connection

The turbo I purchased is from a cobalt 2008, I presume the installation would be the same for the HHR (cobalt is a 2.0 and mine is a 2.2).

Were would the HHR 2.0 oil lines connect to

I won`t be do the installation, a performance shop will be doing the job

Hopefully the performance shop is not asking where the oil lines connect! Are you just wondering for your own curiosity?

Yes, I was just wondering, because the cobalt member who sold me the turbo has included 2 oil pipes.
The only thing he didn't include was the exahaust manifold.
I want to include all the proper parts before I take the HHR to the speed shop, what type of exhaust manifold should I be looking for, would the 2.0 cobalt exhaust manifold fit on my 2.2 HHR.

from what I remember the 2.2 wont make tons of power before needing internal parts I recall the limit some where in the 250hp range

275 crankHP is what the GM build book says. Before the piston rods let go.


If it is the LNF kit, is what I gather..... The oil return is not drilled and tapped on your L61 motor. Also on L61 motors most people put a restriction office inline with the turbo to slow down the oil flow through the turbo, so it doesn't blow any seals inside the turbo. Also it might be a good idea to get an LSJ oil cooler. It will fit your L61 block with a little modification. It may require drilling and plugging an oil gallery, but I can not remember.

Have you purchased the required larger/higher CC injectors? Since the LNF's will not fit the L61 fuel rail.

How are you planing to tune the car for the added fuel of said injectors?

How is the HHR going to see the boost? Since the L61 engine and ECM combo has no way of seeing the boost by design.

All the other parts should bolt-up just fine to the head, and I would run the oil lines to the same spots on the block that the LNF uses.

Thank you for the help, this project will be my first turbo setup, I had plan to have a speed shop do the installation but I want to have all parts ready for them.
For the tune it will be Vince, he recommended to replace the injectors to larger ones.
Can you explain better, if I replace the injectors will I have to replace the fuel rail or only the injectors will do the trick.
Regarding the boost, any sugestions.
I was thinking to keep the PSI below 8

Difference between a LAP engine and a L61 engine, my engine I think is an LAP (2009+), will this make a difference with the turbo installation

The LAP is just an update of the L61 with variable cam timing. The fuel rail can be used with any size injectors within reason. You just need bigger injectors.

8psi should be fine for all the engine internals and transmission, but I still have no idea how the ECU is going to read or see the boost. Vince really needs to explain this to you.
