Acetone mileage improver?

In another thread (starting at post #96 there was a reference to acetone in minute quantities boosting gas mileage. I personally am skeptical about the claim - not that it can boost the mileage, but that it doesn't do damage to any parts in the fuel system. I have a friend that has a friend (yeah, I know about the friend of a friend thing...) who is a chemical engineer, he warned me about any plastic parts in the fuel system or coatings on the gas tank etc. being attacked by the acetone. Even in small quantities, over time, it could do damage.

Any one's thoughts on this?

This is the link referenced:

(Warning it is a loooong read. About every second or third paragraph he gets back to the point.

First of all it comes in a plastic bottle and I then poured a small amount into another plastic bottle to measure it out in.I filled up my 96 saturn 2 days ago and then put in 4 oz of 100% pure acetone. So I will have to see how this tank goes and if there was any gains.

The last thing that I am worried about is that 1 part per 4-5,000 is going to have any negitive affect on anything it runs through.I have no idea what I have put in my cars gas tanks over the years.Who know`s what the hell is in that stuff on the shelf that is to stop this and fix that.

Tommorow I will fill my 04 astro and give it a shot of acetone too I do about 60,000 miles a year.If this stuff gives me 10% more miles per gallon I`am .It will not matter to some people if it does work they would never put it in there tank unless GM sold the stuff and backed it up.

So I will run a few tanks and see how it goes I get a constent 46-47 miles per Canadian gallon (4.55 liters) in the saturn.
