Also, I just discovered the resonator sticks down below the car a lot more than the stock resonator, making the clearance under the car smaller.

Ok guys I have a new question.
Does anyone have the cobalt borla system the touring one not the sport?

I remember learning that a round muffler produces sound waves in all directions not just up and down, so there might be no drone from that one, and it would be a direct fit to my current cat back, correct?

I think I remember someone on here getting the cobalt one, anyone know that guy?

the cobalt exhaust is not a 100% match..i think there is a different bend in it somewhere and the hangers are located in different areas (cant remember exactly)

the aftermarket kits will have bigger resonators to reduce sound...that is why on my magnaflow kit, i put on an even bigger one to reduce drone. It worked pretty good, reducing drone by like 40%.. but its still there , but i like how it sounds now

Anyone have any luck insulating the spare tire compartment?

I keep calling muffler shops, and they keep telling me if it's not stock your going to get drone.

I tried calling borla once over the phone and they say the same thing, which contradicts what they state on the front page of there website.

And I know plenty of 4 cylinder cars with no drone and sound like a muscle car.

I mean at least all the other companies have a sound guarantee, I don't think I'm going to ba able to return this one.

I'm still waiting for the said break in period.

But, let's say all fails, was it a good price to pay for all stainless tubing?

Luckily there is a clamp right where you can easily swap mufflers out. :)

I do have a question for you oldblue or anyone with muffler experiance...

The borla muffler is said to be straight through, but it enters in the muffler on the right side and goes in about 1/3 then there is a 1/3 gap of open space, and then the last 1/3 is the same as the first but the pipe is one the other side.

Would a straight through magnaflow where the pipe goes all the way through and the whole muffler is glass packed instead of the front and rear part seperation help with the drone.

I mean, everyone knows having a hollow tin can produces the most drone, so why do they stick one right in the middle, and the pipes internally don't line up, so I'm sure the exhaust gasses bounce around a bit before they leave???

I will have to contact that cobalt muffler guy, because the cobalt muffler is completely circular and not oval, so I assume it is completely straight through.

i heard adding another pipe may reduce drone...or you can add a bigger resonator to reduce the amount of drone. Not 100% though.

start pulling the seats and carpet and install sound deadner

I've had three Magnaflow mufflers, all noisy with drone, now these were with the stock 1 3/4 inch pipe with the stock 2.2 13 inch resonator.
My new Walker system is 2 1/4 inch pipe with a 25 inch resonater, the muffler is the same as the Borla the pipe goes in about a 1/3 of the muffler and is offset to the outlet.
I've talked to several who have lined the trunk with sound deadner matting and they say it is much quieter.
I thought I read you had an SS stick muffler have you tried putting that in place of the Borla muffler to see if that is not droning?

I have the stock catback from the supercharged cobalt ss on mine and find the sound perfect, but takes a bit of work to fit, it is also longer so the tip needs to be shortened, and the muffler hanger moved.
unfortunately it is 10yrs old and on its way out.

No I don't have the stick muffler I have the automatic, I was looking to purchase that one but you said you would go with the borla.

Hmm, i might try the sound deadening then, if it will work.

Because I know a cobalt with the same system probably won't get drone because the trunk insulates the noise from the rest of the car.

I sent a message to frenchy to see if he will comment on this, and if he does and says there is no drone, then the circular muffler he has might do the trick, because that is the only difference right?
