Yes, mine used to act normal when when turning on the air. A slight dip in rpms.
But now it revs to 1000rpm and sputters to 500rpms and keeps bobbing up and down.

I am wondering if there is something that might be causing that, that would also just so happen to affect mpg as well. Like a sensor, or vacuum leak?

Could be dirty TB or MAF, or loose wiring to the TB or AC compressor

I'm thinking you did not get one of the rubber hoses on right. The first time I took the air cleaner box off my car when I put the bent hose on the front of the box back on I had it folded on the back side.

This messes with the MAF big time.

The second time I took the air box off I forgot to plug the MAF in at all. That time I got a CEL after reading some posts here on this site I figured it out and plugged it back in. After that every thing has been fine.

Some thing is off! I haven reset my fuel in the DIC in six months and am showing 31.6 mpg
2.2 l auto, K&N drop in filter, running 32lbs all 4 tires, stock 1 3/4 muffler, windows down mostly, hhhmmmm I ponder this .

could be a number of things causing this..just for basics here, our engines struggle with the AC on. Mine sputters oddly sometimes when sitting at a light. When accelerating with the AC on, it takes forever to gear up and the intake is screaming sucking in as much air as it can but its the engine that can only do so much while its being strained by the AC.

Second thing, it could be the type of gas you are using. Some stations use more ethanol then others which can effect your gas mileage.

It could also be the way youre driving. When youre accelerating, the intake is making a nice roar and you might be pressing a little harder than normal (and not realizing it) and youre "feeding" the rawr which again is using more fuel.

Check the status of your oil - new, old, etc
Check spark plugs condition - pull each one and see what color they are
And go to your local part store and buy a can called SeaFoam Gas Treatment. This stuff reeeaaally cleans out your injectors and whatnot . Split the bottle up between 2 or 3 gas fillups and re-check your numbers

My car has over 250,000 miles on it now. This is my second engine now and it had a bit over 65,000 in its previous body so has a tad over 100,000 total miles on it now.

I the DIC usually tells me I am getting around 25 MPG but by doing the math it almost always comes out to 30 or very close. I think you might do well to look at your wheel bearing and brakes.

Might be your parking brake is hung up a bit. That was the real problem with the kids Neon last summer. The Neon always got 30+ MPG then suddenly dropped to less than 20.

It took some head scratching to figure it out, thought it might be the transmission or something else, but somehow I figured it out and swapped out the cable for the parking brake on my own. I also had to replace the brake shoes and hardware inside the drum but it was worth it.

Once it was fixed I told her that if she is going to use the parking break she should use it all the time to keep the cable free. The Neon is 11 years old so I suppose it was just time for the parking break to fail anyway but it sure seems like when ever she uses any of our cars stuff just fails.

Today I reset my DIC trip meter to zero and my mpg, filled up with 87 did my run to Hamilton, rainy 63 degrees, 80 mph stretches an 40 mph as well, 15 percent in city driving.
Round trip 105 miles , 31.8 mpg.
I'll run this tank out and DIC and do the math to confirm mileage.

Here is what I have changed since I purchased the car almost two years ago...

New KYB shocks all around with full strut hardware(original springs).

4 new hub and bearing assemblies.

New front brakes and rotors.
Brake fluid flush and fill.

4 new khumo exsta 4xii tires

Front greasable moog sway bar end links.

GM ac delco iridium spark plugs.

Upgraded front lower control arm vertical bushing and ball joint(moog).

K&N intake kit.

Intake and exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoids.

Oil is serviced with semi-synthetic blend in normal intervals(not according to dash)

Dextron orange coolant has been changed along with ac delco thermostat.
Now the coolant stays about 176-180 coasting down the freeway, everywhere else 180-190, and peaks at 217 when fan kicks on, higher on hotter days, but still in the good temp range, never above 230.

Transmission fluid and filter has been changed 2 times since I bought it, and transmission shop said everything has looked fine, each time.
I can feel the shifts a little more now, but it does not clunk, and also 1.5sec. after I start the car there is a small quick thud, while still in park, but after that everything is fine, I'm still trying to figure out what that is? Maybe air conditioner clutch, but still happens with ac off?

Engine compartment is clean and looks brand new, no oil leaks what so ever.

Car has been getting 22.5mpg since I have purchased it.

I drive about 56 miles a day. About 35min. trip one way, all freeway, but...
Freeway coming home contains a stretch that is a steep grade about 4 miles long and has a 70mph speed limit. Which is also my average speed on the freeway.

Rpms usually stay in the range of 2300-3500 ave.
Except on that hill, then it ave. 3000-4000.

I will have to check the spark plugs when I get a chance, but before the intake when I changed them they had perfect even wear signs(not white, not black, just normal wear look), so I assume they are working the same. I'll think about trying sea-foam, but I don't know all the cons of using it.

One of the first things I did when I got the HHR was to put the platinum spark plugs in. A lot of folks say not to use them in the 2.2 Ecotec but they have been great in my buggy.

As I have already said I get pretty good MPG.

It may be that switching to the copper plugs would be beneficial for you.
