You know HipHotRod......

You got me thinking about that "black soot" in the tailpipe. I have almost 19,000 miles on my 06' 2.4, auto and I have NO black soot/residue.

How many owners really do have the black residue on the tail pipe? Go look to make sure.

I have also checked my dipstick for fuel smell and have none that I can notice.

As you said, you have a vehicle of a different color

Hey Snoop,

I have asked all of our local crew and no one has that in their tailpipes. Also the poll on gassy smelling oil cap and dipstick is coming back the same way. One of our gang with 60k on it smells a faint trace of gasoline. I need to find some proof and unfortunately I have to pay for it. One would think with the level of sophistication that our car's fuel management/monitoring sensor's have, a trouble code would be found. This is why the dealer will do nothing. No code, no problems despite the obvious low mileage and black **** and gas smell.

Regarding the bad ring, wouldnt that trigger some code?

Are you losing oil? Does the engine ever smoke?

Sophistication? Hardly. Knock sensors and O2 sensors haven't changed much in 25 years--they've just added more of them to the cars. O2 won't throw a code until it's long gone bad and knock sensors can only detect pinging. Other than that, there's nothing else to trigger a code.

A bad ring will not trigger a code. With the balance shafts and dampers on these engines you cannot diagnose a bad cylinder without doing at least a compression test, but most competent mechanics will do a full leakdown just to make sure.

I would take the car to another dealership and even an independent mechanic if they won't help either. I guarantee if you come back with a bad leakdown they're going to have a lot of explaining to do if they have to wind up replacing the whole engine.

Yea, as mentioned, I have to pay for the test. Again, its brand new, I'd get royally hosed trading it in so soon. Maybe I can talk to some other dealers and plead my case before I take it to them.
