LE5 and LAP

Is there any essential difference in the two?

LE5(2.4L) and that LAP(2.2L) are essentially the same engine, are they not? Both are VVT, both DOHC, both ecotecs. Aside from displacement, are there any differences in actual configuration?

If not, why won't(or will they?) aftermarket camshafts work on the LE5 like they do for the 2.2L's..?

I've never actually seem many details on the LE engines , one wouldn't think they would have changed very much in the heads between the two but who knows.

The LE 5 is a high compression engine.(don't ask my why) And it runs best on premium, at least 91 octane. The LAP is a low compression engine. (again, don't ask me why) and it can run very well on 87 or 89 octane.

Yes, I know the two have different compression ratios. I would assume the reasoning being, one needed to be higher rated than the other. Easy way to do it is mill the head a bit to bump the compression a point or two.

I was speaking, mechanically.

Edit: Also, just friendly FYI, my 2.4 has run great on 87 since i've owned it. No KR to speak of, verified with EFIlive.

Just a quick note the 2.4 will run fine on 87 octane it just will not produce the same power or of that matter the same efficiency since at the first sign of detonation the computer effectively de-tunes the engine. I am not sure all it does but one of the things is to remove timing from the ignition.

I have found that mine runs fine on just about anything but there is a measurable differance in MPG only about 1-2 MPG. From a seat of the pants stand point it feels like it pulls a little better on 91-93 octane.
