Use what the manual states to use.

I'll leave it at that. Personally I use M1 and a Pure One filter.

It's all personal preference. Most oils out there today will not harm an engine. So really you're safe doing whatever you want. I'm a Mobil 1 user because my HHR is not used too often and I tend to feel safer knowing that the oil is supposed better when it comes to it's molecular structure and all that junk.

Personally, I don't believe a thing that GM puts forth in the Owners Manual.... Every morning when I get up I change the oil and filter.... Who knows what got in there during the dark of night???

Seriously, GM has a standard for oil quality... I'm not gonna look it up. Use any good quality oil meeting that standard. Things have changed. Manufacturing materials, processes and tolerances are better, as are oil quality standards. GM has spent a lot of research in the OLS and you can count on that.

As far as dyno vs. synthetics.... Are you Republican or Democrat? Theist or Atheist? Ahhhh, choices.... My opinion and $0.02 worth is that if you trade often and don't run it over about 200,000 mi., use any good quality oil meeting the standards. If you want to go for a record, the good synthetics are better.

If you don't like following the OLS, change it more often if you like spending the money and sending it to the Middle East.

While I'm not going to say what oil I use and how often I change it, I will say that only documenting adherence to factory recommendations has had any effect on any warranty issues and resale value in the end.

The search feature is our friend. But as for me...5 qts. Royal Purple 5-30 + Wix filter = one happy HHR owner. http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/rpmoa.html

I tried soy bean oil one time but I smelled like a french fryer going down the road.........that might have been because it was a generic and not a Brand name oil......
