Currently running Syntec 5W30. Switching to Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 later this year (better Hillsdale? )

I use Red Line Synthetic 10W30, an extended drain interval and a filter change at 50% oil life.

Also, I use Red Line Superlight Shockproof Gear Oil in the my five speed.

Don't want to open a can of worms...but why would you use 10W30 when the manual states 5W30? I realize that we all do stuff outside what the manual says, however, it's my understanding that all the newer vehicles should use 5W30 to provide the best lubrication for the engines. I'm off to do some investigating of my own.

Valvoline for me, and a K&N oil filter. When I get enough miles to change the oil that is. But I do like the K&N filter. If they are that good for an intake I'd bet they are that good for the oil

As I operate my HHR in southwestern states and run it hard sometimes, I choose to trade the fuel-mileage and extreme low temperature oil performance for better lubrication at higher oil temperatures and severe duty. Going from a 5W to a 10W oil and going from a product with a petroleum base stock to one with an ester base stock are two parts of that trade-off.

I'm also developing an extended drain interval based on those that I use for other vehicles in our fleet which also use synthetic oil. For now, I change a filter at 50% oil life, reset the OLM, change the filter again at 50%, then change the oil and filter when the OLM comes on. My guess is that will be around 16,000 miles.

Fuel mileage is only one issue. I had a customer sieze a cam in -32 deg temps because the oil flow was to slow to the top of the engine. It was Dyno oil so that may have someting to do with it.

As far as Penzoil products or any parafin based oil, I steer clear of them on alloy engines. They tend to sludge up even when changed regularly.

I use Syntec (hotrod) and Mobile 1 in my new cars. Switched to Mobile when the started to offer more then one wt rating. At first it was just to thin and I lost oil pressure in my Vette.

I'd use Amsoil if it was easier to get. Work pit crew on a H/Prod Bug eye in 70's. We gained oil pressure at race temps and had no bearing failures all season unlike changing bearings after every race with dyno oil.
