What are these tabs?

Any idea what these two tabs are for? I want to take off my valve cover to paint, and was wondering if I need to put them back on.

Just taking a wild guess here, but perhaps pins from the stock intake go into those?

I agree with DaJoker. I also installed the CGS intake and I remember about 4 rubber pins that snapped into holes that retained the stock intake.

I'd tend to agree with the other 2 on this one. Although I don't believe they are the rubber ones that Steve mentioned. On my 2.2 the stock air filter assembly slid over some rubber tips and they still appear to be there. One looks to be just above the radiator cap and the other just below the oil cap by the black hose on the right. Perhaps there is something on the bottom of the assembly itself that slides into those holes. Mine is stored in a plastic bag under my boyfriends mobile home and is a little hard to drag out to check or I would.

Those tabs have nothing to do with the air intake on a 2.4, on my 2.4 the tabs are there but nothing is attached to them....could have something to with factory assembly.

That makes sense too. If the engines are assembled by automated equipment, it's possible that the machine used to put this part in place, might use those tabs to hold it.

I'm sure before long, someone will find something to attach to it as another mod under the hood.

They may be the mounting tabs for the cobalt engine's covers. The cobalts have a completely different intake and cover system than the HHRs and this may be the mounting holes for them... always a thought.

I found the answer myself. I was having my wifes car serviced at Saturn and checked out the new Ion's 2.2 Ecotec engine. Looks like my 2.4, only it has a metal line attached to those 2 tabs. So, I guess it is used in some applications but not ours.

Notice that their 2.2 valve cover is like the 2.4 HHR, and not the 2.2 engine. Wonder why?

Because it uses a four-coil ignition setup, unlike the 2.2L HHR's 2-coil setup.

That is why.
