NEW tailgate and painting will be more than $500.

well its worse than the pic looks, but do you think they will replace or just "fix" the damage with bodywork?

i think if i have to pay out of pocket i am going to do a two-tone paint job

Hard to judge by the picture....and you said it's worse than it looks.

Before you get the Insurance company involved, run it by a dealer or shop THAT YOU DO NOT INTEND TO DO BUSINESS WITH. See what they say....shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes.

But either way, I would bet a single large, easy.

i did not get a pic of it, but they also dented the other side of the tailgate around the beauty bar. they also cracked the beauty bar. sucks because it must have been one of those larger/tall texas trucks. probably felt like a pebble to him, but left me with a bunch of damage.

If your car was parked wouldn`t that be under your comprehensive instead of collision?

I'm sorry to hear this happen to you, It could be a good reason to do a two tone job. I love the look of the two tones. Also you might be able to come up with a way to eliminate the rear beauty bar and french everything in, that would be cool. I know how it feels to have this happen I was rear ended in mine and it held up very good but still almost $1,000 buck for the new bumper cover, paint and labor.
Best of luck and try to see the bright side if there is one

It can be fixed and repainted. Replacement and paint and blend probably around $1200-1500. Probably fixed for around $600-750.
