In Salt Lake we get enough snow that I thought they would help, but opted not to get them. I like the look without them. However, I've been checking out all the HHR's with running boards and I don't see that they help too much with keeping dirt off the car. I'm going to invest in the molded factory mud flaps as I think they would work as well or better.

First thing I got for mine was the factory splashguards. They look good but I soon realized they dont fully protect the hindquarters. Now with guards+boards I dont see or hear road grime kicked up on my panels. It's an expense but was worth it to protect my paint job IMO. Heck I may even remove the tape patches they put on the quarters. Well maybe I'll keep em on a while longer just to be sure...

In everyone's honest opinion, what do you think about running boards on an SS? Eventually this may be the way I go, but as of now it just seems like a waste of money. The protection from the road is an added bonus to me, I like them more for the looks... My "big idea" when my warrenty is over, is to start some major mods to give it more of an old street rod feel. (chopped top, suicide, and shaved doors) I dunno, what's everyone elses input?

They look fine. This is SSROADSTER's Blueflash SS where it accidently came with a skirt on one side and a running board on the other:

No doubt they look great but no way I would replace skirts on an SS with boards. I have read on previous threads that skirts dont protect sides as well as boards, but if I opted for an SS it wouldn't see winter! I see a few around town this winter and quite a few new Camaro's and it makes me wince..

I've had both. Running boards on my LT and now skirts on my SS. They both protect about the same.

There must be some misconseption about running boards keeping the car cleaner...it doesnt per say..the dirt you see accumulating on the side body comes from the front/ rear wheel wells and road spray, not from under the tires( unless you DO NOT have boards/skirts)I have one with skirts and one without. Boards and skirts keep the road pebbles from tearing hell outta your paint and rear fenders, thats all.Mudflaps go one step further and keep the road rocks low and out of your underside, mostly.
Between the 2 cars, they both are about the same dirt wise unless a mud hole was ran thru....
and from what I can tell the SS boards are only different because they sloop down towards the outside., and not flat...otherwise dimentionaly about the same
