Hey EZ...I haven't done this myself, but from what I remember, it's easier to remove the old gold badge if you take the whole thing off the car. All it takes is using some dental floss or fishing line behind the badge. Wrap it around a couple fingers and use it in a sawing motion and it should come right off.
Then you should be able to remove the gold one after that. Just be gentle when separating those, so you don't snap the gold part in half like CH did.

It can be done but the are pretty pliable and break if you're not careful, the outer bowtie I mean.
I agree with pony, tape and paint. I think mine looks pretty good!
