I think I've seen vinyl in a diamond plate pattern, may want to look for something like that.

We also have the rear bumper protector in DP look:





We are also working on a pair of running board covers, and rear bumper cover - made from real polished diamond plate. Should be completed soon.

Alm. Diamond Plate is fairly easy to work with. Head down to the local iron works and pick some up and fab the parts yourself. I haven't done any on my HHR but I did trimmed out a car trailers with it. It might look good with some diamond plate on the bottom quarter of the doors. The thinner stuff can be bent with your hands.
