I know the owner, Joe, a little bit. Have spoke to him a few times and he's a wealth of knowledge like WOW.

Question New facination with ....

Theese things ...
http://www.mooneyesusa.com/moon-discs-c-188_211.html

Got some questions ...looks like they are basicly hub caps but appear to be a low cost alternative because EVERYDAMNED thing I like ...despite everyones best efforts falls in the strictly "custom cut" field ...not to say I'm completely ruling out new rims but in the meantime ...

Do they fit any size they are meant for ... It looks as far as I can tell that the standard "spring" mount are like the old school hubcaps ...not liking that so much but there are screw mounted ones for the 16"... what I dont know is if the will fit the stock rims I already have and do you have to modify the rim to mount them ...

Any Ideas out there guys ?

You see I see the three little holes and wonder two things ...is there just like a generic clip screw mount that holds them on ... can you drill a rim ??? if so can you take them to a shop and have the holes custom bored to take say those Skull Bolts for license plate mounting ??? cause three of these turned so the jaws all face outward (with a little blue locktight on the bottom threads of course) would look wicked awsome !

I think the full Moon disks would look great.... there's been several guys that have done this. Not sure about using the skull bolts as a mounting bolt though.

I did MoonEyes years ago. I was among the first to have them if not the first. They looked really good. You can't use the clip on ones because the rims don't have enough lip to hold them on. You have to get the screw on ones and drill and tap your rims. I had two different sets of MoonEye discs on our HHR in just over a year. The reason I had two sets is because they kept cracking. They would crack out in a half moon pattern around each screw. I was very particular when I installed these and the way I drilled my rims and everything so it was not an install problem. I think the roads are just too rough in Southern California. Yes, they are inexpensive so if you have to replace them they are not all that bad. To me it just wasn't worth it. The last set I put on was the day before I went to Bud's Deja Vu Rendezvous. I literally put them on the night before we went down there. When I got home two days later, two of them were cracked. That is when I went and bought the black 18" wheels and was done with it. You also have to take the discs off to check your tire pressures which was too much of a pain. Also, the discs actually hit the top of the valve stem and bend them in a little. They rubbed a hole through the side of the valve caps.

This is the first day I installed them. Bought the HHR on 7-3-2006. Installed these on 7-22-2006.

Cruising Irwindale Speedway at Bud's Rendezvous in 2007.

By the way.. Saw you asked about 18s. These are 18s with 245s. I love the wider meats to make it look tough (even though it isn't!). This is with almost 2" lower in the front and 1.75" in the rear. I love that these have the lip on the outside that most front wheel drive wheels don't.

so do any materials NOT flex ... I actually had this on the back burner of my brain while jostling up and down the dusty trail to the cabin we rented last week ... and of course I'll have to look closer once I get them ordered in ...however wondered if maybe a black O-ring either side of the self tapping screw might act as a flexible buffer to improve survivability ...mind you I'm NOT an engineer " Dammit Jim I'm a glass repair medic not a structural engineer!!!" ...but one thing Capt. James Tiberius Kirk taught me ...theres always a way ... okay rip away fellas tell me what you think !?

I think if you opened up the hole in the disc and put a rubber grommet in there, and a short piece of steel tube, you could tighten the screw down on the steel tube and the disc would 'float' on the grommet. That is how the isolation mounts work that we use for mounting electronic equipment on stamping presses.
