I thought I heard a gun shot!
I had an incident with my Suburban about 10 years ago. I was behind a semi on the highway when a flat piece of metal came off the truck. I tried to straddle the debris, but it was sliding across the lane, and I ended up running it over with the front left tire. I hear a loud bang, and figure that the tire shot it up and it banged off the floorpan. However, as I drove along I heard a grinding noise every so often. My exit was coming up, so I got off the highway, pulled into a parking lot and checked it out. The metal piece(about 3/4" thick, 3" wide and about 18" long) had been run over by the front tire and shot upwards, impaling the running board. The piece was sticking vertically thru the running board, with the bottom edge fractions of an inch off the pavement. The grinding noise I was hearing ocurred when the suspension dipped enough to drag the bottom edge of the metal piece onto the pavement, also sending a shower of sparks out. Since this was at night, it must have been quite a light show! Fortunately I was able to pull the piece out of the running board and continue on.

Holy crap
Better it went through the tire/rim than your windshield (this happened here a month or so ago; a piece of steel rod on the road got kicked up and went through the windshield and impaled the guy. He was dead before he hit the guardrail)

grade 8 bolt. Nice choice of hardware! Now thank the Lord it was a rear tire and not a front. That would have ruined your day.
