LS to SS body kit

I have a base of a base model 😂 but I love my little Hotrod. I want to dress up the body some and install a different front bumper but the only ones I have been able to find is the “SS bumper cover” on eBay. I think it’s pretty much a direct bolt on replacement for the stock bumper on my LS. Correct me on that if I’m wrong.

Does anyone else know of any other bumpers or body kits for the HHR? This stock front bumper is just a killer 🙈

Not quite, you'll need the SS grille also, or there will be a gap.

There are these kits

Thank you both. I have not been able to find the SS grill so I would just get the bumper first and deal with the gap until I was able to find one. I wish GM or another company would make more aftermarket replacement parts for the SS so us base model guys could do the swap easier if we wanted to.

That won't happen. There is just no market for it. Very few "base model" folks out there looking to do this mod.

It's comes down to Supply and Demand.

Oldblue 11-20-2017 09:48 AM

There once was a kit.... but not from Nantucket!

Unfortunately. I think these HHRs will be in high demand in years to come. They are modern day classics. I’ll end up buying an SS one day when some other bills are paid off but for now I want to dress up my LS and make it a little more customized.

Look at pictures of the grill/hood of an SS. There is a bar in the middle with the bow tie emblem.
Will the grill shell work?

Here is a grill.

Here's just the grill insert:

Here's the grill bezel, I call it a shell:

If I buy the SS bumper cover, I know it will bolt on to my LS model BUT will it work with my absorber or will it not fit until I get an absorber off of an sS?

firemangeorge 12-08-2017 05:29 AM

Best way is to get the correct foam absorber.
Take a look at this thread. Post #6 has a picture that shows the parts needed for a complete front swap.

Did the SS mod a few years ago. This is what you will need. Got it all from Rock Auto.

Oldblue 12-09-2017 06:40 AM

RF2 do you have any part number from Rockauto for that kit.
I haven’t seen it on EBay in a couple of years. Oh sure EBay make me a liar

firemangeorge 12-09-2017 09:20 AM

Guess you have to get the fog lights separate. Don't see them in the pic.
(SS fog lights are different from the regular HHR ones. They don't interchange.)

HotrodHHR 12-09-2017 10:56 AM

I’m doing a budget build lol. One piece at a time. On eBay just the bumper cover is only like $280. That’s another reason I’m thinking I could put the bumper cover on first then find all the little nit-picky pieces to complete it.

HotrodHHR 12-09-2017 11:16 AM

My main question would be if I order the bumper cover on eBay for $280, could I install it with my stock absorber? I’m having an issue finding just the absorber. I’m not as concerned with the air dam or other minor plastic pieces at the moment.

donbrew 12-09-2017 12:25 PM

Depends on how legal you want to be. Technically speaking that chunk of foam is the bumper.

Maybe you are not using the correct search term, I got Amazon,eBay and several others with the part number in GoOgle. 25809883

You have to look up all the parts. They had the lights too. This is what it turned out like.

Oldblue 12-09-2017 05:26 PM

I’m thinking one part at a time will work out to obsolete parts and hard to find pieces adding up to way more than $999.00. Plus all those prices have a shipping cost , I like the one shot , one order , get everything you need. I’m not a fan of fog / driving lamps , so those can wait.

HotrodHHR 12-09-2017 08:45 PM

Well the bumper cover is $280, the absorber is $150, both fog light beers are $75, lower grill is about $35, not really worried about the SS upper grill right now haven’t looked up the plastic piece for under the bumper yet but it’ll save a little bit. Idk. I am having a hard time justifying spending a grand on just having a nicer bumper when I could spend that and get some other things done like suspension or getting the dents fixed.

RF2 12-10-2017 02:47 AM

Here you go, Parts at Rock auto bumper insert $45.99 Grill $45.79 Lower grill $17.10 Fog light inserts $20.00 ea Fog light assy $21.79 ea
Front bumper cover $60.78 At carparts.com Most of the other front end parts will fit on the SS front end.
I was repainting mine anyway all the body mods were getting done at one time.
I needed the SS front end to instal my intercooler for the supercharger.

Oldblue 12-10-2017 08:25 AM

I spend the money on
New front SS non Brembo rotors $200.00
Carbon fibre brake pads. $85.00
Steering rack. $200.00
Fuel injectors $185.00
Fuel pump. $200.00
Sway bay bushings. $30.00
Ball joints. $80.00

I can’t see my front bumper whilst driving!
It won’t make Oldblue any faster!
It won’t give me better fuel mileage

It would look cool, but not really necessary.

This is why I needed the SS front bumper. The intercooler fits right behind it. The HP now is (under boost) is 275. I still get 32 highway and 27 town if I keep my foot out of it.

Cat Man HHR 12-10-2017 02:10 PM

I love modifications :twothumbs:

Here’s my baby as of now. Just installed a set of Touren TR9 wheels, as well as the black headlights and the honeycomb grill was added soon after I got the car. I hope to get a decent turbo for it and the SS front end would make this look sooo much better.

Oldblue 12-21-2017 09:33 AM

Or save yourself the trouble, keep this beauty for a DD and score an SS from our classifieds!!

HotrodHHR 12-21-2017 02:56 PM

I would love to do that actually. I still owe some on this one but very well may do that when it’s paid off. If I can convince my wife the necessity of having two HHRs

Oldblue 12-21-2017 03:38 PM

One for everyday and the SS for grins on Sunday!

Here’s how the ole Hotrod looks now. Now I need to redo front suspension and start saving up for a supercharger or a turbo.

Glad you made out!
