Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that although the vinyl may allow easier change and more often, if you want to, paint allows for more intricately graduated changes in a chosen motif. With flames for example, I'm not sure if you could begin at the grill with white and then transition to yellow and then to red all in one visually seamless vinyl piece the same way you would in paint. Technology moves on very quickly, so I could easily be wrong. The only downside I see with paint and some designs is when it comes time to sell. Vinyl is easier if the buyer really likes most of your mods, but would really rather personalize the "paint" themselves.

Old School. Paint it. I have used vinyl striping before, but for a large flame, graphics job I think paint is the way to go.

See ya down the road

I am all about the vinyl- I can design the graphic in Illustrator, competitively bid the job and get the exact results that I was hoping for. Plus, I can reproduce or repair as needed. You need to find a company with high end printing capabilities (such as those that do vehicle wraps).

I think it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I use vinyl for straight line pin stripes and the new vinyls are of such good quality that even graphics can be expexted to perform well and look very good. Having said that I will be painting my scroll striping and flames because I have been a painter for thirty plus years and am more comfortable with that...To each his own

In actuality, pained pinstripes come off over time with normal washes and will tend to look pretty bad. Overall, it is a better choice however. Just wanted you to know they are not "lifetime" since they are not clearcoated over.
