Shifter - The jury is in

It's confirmed, the Cobalt shifter will fit the HHR.

Looking for a short shifter for my HHR I was coming up empty handed, knowing the Cobalt and HHR shared the same platform, engine and tranny I decided to take a shot. I ordered a short shifter to fit the Cobalt up to 05.

It fits great. This one came with a reverse lock out which apparently some Cobalts have so I just didn't use that part of it. Be warned that this shifter is designed for a car which has lower seating so it is Shooooort, but it works great and for me it's perfect.

Nice job. Was the removal/install hard?

Nothing wrong with short - that's for sure!

I bet it shifts a WHOLE lot better with the shorter throw. !?!

Whoa...I could barely see it, stubby heh...

Remember...Size doesn't matter...
It's not the size of the wave, but the motion of the ocean!!!

Dang, that looks short!! My guess is about 2" less than stock. Right?

With me at 6' and the seat all the way back, it looks like I'd have to lean forward to reach 1st, 3rd and 5th. I also like having the armrest down. Does that create an issue for you?

I find the throw OK and the reach good, but also have thought about doing the mod just for the shorter throw. I think what made me decide to hold off was the available selection of knobs. I like the stock chrome ball!

You should see my 5' 4" daughter driving... she likes the armrest down and with the seat forward, she actually has to do an awkward reach, with her elbow up and forward and her forearm straight down. It really looks funny to me!

On my old Datsun Z, I modified the shifter by fabbing a piece and moving the pivot point upward. That shortened the throw considerable while maintaining the same top height. In looking at some pics of the Cobalt shifter, it looked difficult to relocate the pivot.

Anyway, how about some feedback on the reach for you (please mention your height)?

It wasn't really very hard. I just used the TWM Cobalt shifter instructions and modified it to work with the HHR. it only took about an hour.

Actually I really like short when it comes to shifters and this one's no exception. It really does work great and it's smooth.

Well this wave's pretty small but it's motion compensates very well. :)
