Reduce glare? I haven't noticed a horrible glare of the dash, or just appearances.

another reason for a dash cover is to prevent sun damage (cracks) to the dash plastic. This can be a problem in hot weather areas & with cigarette smoke

Not at all impressed with the dash cover I got from eBay. It does not fit correctly and in order for it to stay in place, you would have to use the Velcro strips that come with it, which means applying glue to the dash to hold one half of the two-piece fastener system. No, thanks.
Liberal use of a reflective window screen and some sort of plastic-protective coating will held to prolong the integrity of the dash.

Dash mats are a hold over from the days of the foam molded dashes that used to crack and separate over time. The mats were supposed to protect from the sun, but most people bought them after their dash had cracked and used the mat to cover the now-ugly dash. Many people used Armor-All (or similar) protectants to help prevent cracking. However, this usually only compounded the problem because the protectant would absorb into the dash and, unless you reapplied it on a regular basis, the chemicals would begin to dry out the dash from the inside and actually cause cracks. Not to mention the "fogging" of the interior surfaces of the windows caused by the protectants. The materials used today are far less likely to crack, even with prolonged exposure to the sun. The only real issue today is fading. The use of Armor-All on our dashes would now only be for appearance purposes. Personally, I prefer using a sun shade in the windshield when my car is parked at work and at home in the driveway.
