I just happened to be looking at Mitchell. The PPS sensors are completely different between LS/LT and SS. But they are replaceable.

The LS/LT sensor sits on top of the cushion; the SS sensor in under it.

I have a seat out of a "08 LS and a '09 LS and they have different air bag sensors.

Lethal:

Went to write a post to you just now to tell you my decision to switch out the upholstery, keeping the original seat frame and sensor in place, but looks like you arrived at the same decision that I did about the time I did!

Feel good about this, since as has been posted, messing with the SRS system on any car is not a wise thing to do. Airbags save, but airbags can kill too!

Changing the seat cushions might be a little trickier for me since I upgraded from standard seats to SS seats. Seat frame parts numbers differ between normally aspirated HHR's and the SS, but the diagrams for the frames look identical, so I'm going to go for it. Probably take it to an upholstery since i have no experience in dealing with "soft goods".
