How wide can ya go?

I have an 07 HHR Panel on order and its gonna be a few weeks before it arrives. I want to put the widest tires on it that will fit without rubbing. I want to run 17" rims and 50 series tires. 215/50-17" is stock. Can I go wide as 255/50-17"? Can I go wider? What width rim would you need to run a 255/50-17"? I want to keep the outside diameter close to stock so my speedo stays close to accurate.
I'd like to get some Euromax 612's and run some BF Goodrich g-force T/A's on them.... preferably the 255/50-17"'s if I can get em to fit. Do any of you see a problem with that combo on a non lowered HHR?

255/50/R17 is going to throw your speedo way off (on the low side). You'd be adding 40 mm to the width, but also to your tire diameter. You'll have to go to a 40 or even 35 series to keep the tire diameter close to stock. Check out a good tire size conversion tool such as:

more importantly, if your hhr is going to be automatic, there could be issues with shift points, unless you found a way to reprogram for the different diameter

You would need to do some trimming to fit that tire size. The tire will fit a 17x7 rim such as the Euromax wheel you are looking at, but it will have quite a bulge to the sidewall. The tire is almost 10.5 wide, and that is a lot of tire for the HHR. You have the fender lips to worry about, the rear would hit first when your suspension cycles. Up front the tire if too tall/wide will hit the strut. And finally, in back there's the inside fender on the rear. You can make it work with cutting. If you don't want to get into that, then a 225/50/17 is no problem, and even a 235/50/17 should work given you're not lowered, and the rim you are looking at has the proper offset.
