06 Chevy HHR alternator/power ?'s Can my car handle the system? PLEASE HELP!!!!
I don't believe rebuilding the alternator from an HHR for more output is an option. Unlike older alternators, the HHRs has an adjustable output. When it senses a low battery condition it can bump the output voltage to charge a battery quicker. This smart charge circuit will limit how much current the alternator can put out.
Hey, I'm less than anoob, when it comes to this stuff....
No, not by changing the output cord. The rebuilders do something to the inside....more windings, diodes, or what ever. I had this done about 10 years ago. An alternator went out on a camping/tow vehicle. And I decided to have the original rebuilt in place of doing an over the counter exchange. The guy said for $3.00 more (at that time) he would buiild it for extra output (I think it was in the 160 amp range) And, all I can say is .....it would keep 2 batteries charged to capacity...to the day I sold the vehicle.

Do you recommend any shop to do that kind of work? Sounds pretty risky, but it may not be, its just the first time i have hear something like that.
I had to put a yellow top battery an 2 1.2 farad caps in to run my system..You can put the extra battery to the left of the stock battery and still have room for your spare tire..It will make a very big differance in the amount of power you have..Still every weekend I put the charger on a slow charge to keep them charged fully..
Mach2 posted saying he doesn't believe this can be done because of the type of alternator that is now employed. And, that is probably a good reference.
However, I noticed by your signature, you are in the DFW area. Open the phone book and look for "auto electic". Consult a couple of them for POSSIBLE valid info.
ok what do you suggest about this, a hyper voltage regulator?

I am running 4 premier 3000 spl amps and two 3000 watt premier spl subs and a 780 pemier deck, I have to run 4 Yellow top batteries and had to upgrade my alternator to a higher output. Costly but worth it, dang worth it, i shattered my sunroof in comp.
WOW, where did you get a h/o alternator?
So SO Sad. After a few good months of happy use from my system, I am here to say don't change your factory alternator, the wiring in the hhr can not handle a 250 amp alternator. My car is now settin in a junk yard some where burnt to s crisp. If you are gonna do a system use capacitors, or install an extra 1 wire alternator ust for your extra batteries. Good news though. Allready startin on the new HHR.
