Ok so I bought a aftermarket stereo and ditchet the factory radio . The only way I was able to get the radio to power on and see display was to wrap the red (ignition switch/acc +) to the yellow ( memory /backup +) then twith those two wires together and crim them to the yellow power + coming out of the harness. After a while I noticed the aluminim radio cashing was starting to get hot so i disconnected it . I'm a little concerned about finishing the installation with a radio in my dash with that kind of heat. Also before I disconnected the stereo I tried to wire up the speakers and I couldn't here anything . I heard this car has an amp and a fuse somewhere I have know I dea where . If anyone has ever swapped out the radio on this car could you please advise. This car has had past electrical problems that has been fixed so i'm leary of doing too much after buying a whole new wiring harness. having said that the pprevious radio I took out did not work . I ran a new ground that works and 15 amp fuse was put back in I tested the fuse and it blew just fine when power wire hit the radio as i was moving it around. My electrical issue was from a improper fuse coming fromt he cigarette lighter though all thats been replaced. cost me 900 bucks so i will live without a radio if i have to i just wanted to give you some background.
So my question is ?? The only way I was able to get the radio to power on and see display was to wrap the red (ignition switch/acc +) to the yellow ( memory /backup +) is with those two wires twisted together and crimped to the yellow power + coming out of the harness. but after a while I noticed the aluminim radio case was starting to get hot so i disconnected it . I'm a little concerned about finishing the installation with a radio in my dash with that kind of heat. These two wires are both positives going to a positive I have my jeeps radio installed this way just fine with the same kind of radio . my question is there another way to hook up these two wires or just run with it . im sceptical of the radio starting to get so hot its hard to touch it though .
The correct way is to purchase the GMLAN adapter which will also retain the chimes.
The hacky way is to use any of the "spare" fuse positions in the BCM for the switched power and one of the "live" circuits for the memory. (the cig lighter is live, the existing red wire is live).
Some HHRs do have an amp and sub-woofer. Look at the label on the glovebox door code UQ3 means Enhanced Audio.
Yeah I didn't do anything hacky but I see your point. All I did was use what was pictured in my ad . hense i had to run a groundwire to chassy. all the wires are color coded , some eople on youtube used the piece you mentioned and some just used the universal harness adapter. What I was trying to say is car had other problems in the past and I didn't want to create anymore wireing this radio up. I did not use the cigarette lighter I just took the old radio out , pugged in the harness , ran a new ground and thats where i'm at right now.
you have a link to the chime harness thing don was talking about ? by the way hello blue . i remember you . i have the same hhr that had the water in the fuel as well HAHAHAHAAA always something with the HHR I tell you.
I get that, been there did that and corrected that with an adapter from Crutchfield, now I’m not associated with them, and I’m sure you could get the adapter part number off their website and find one at another source, That heat problem, indicates there is a problem and it could melt and burn down your HHR .
just stating the facts, I’ve seen here over the last decade and in my shop, when a friend can’t figure out what went wrong with a simple radio swap.
I know what you mean watch this video this happened to me before and I shot this video about it and its relative to this discussion i'm not looking for views or any clout please watch
