I had a similar problem last night. I noticed no lights on steering wheel, HVAC, or the roof LED. Unfortunately, the tail lights and front parking lights were out too. Turns out I blew the parking light fuse (pleading the 5th on how ). It is fuse #69 (10 amp) under the hood. Once I replaced it all was well.

I don't know if this exactly approximates your issues but take my experience for what it is worth. BTW- do you have any aftermarket electronics installed?

No, I don't have any aftermarket electronics installed. I still haven't had the chance to check the fuses, due to last night's Halloween festivities... will do that tonight.

SoCal, I tried turning off the automatic lights.. and tried to adjust the dimmer switch... and it doesn't respond. Again, let me make sure all the fuses are seated correctly first and will let you know if it worked.

Da Loca, I think I may have worded my other response wrong. If the sensor in the car does not think the lights should be on then the dimmer switch will not let you adjust the level, at least on mine. If the sensor thinks the lights should be on the you should be able to adjust them. I will look into this more this evening as there is a good probability that I have got it wrong, going on limited memory right now. Will let you know later..

Ok here it is. If the auto-sensor is not activated (thinks the lights should not be On) then my dimmer switch has no effect on the brightness. If on the other hand the auto-sensor has the lights On then the dimmer switch works. I hope this helps some. Maybe you should try it at night, the auto-sensor will turn you headlights and instrument pannel lights on and you should be able to adjust the brightness, now turn off the auto-lights and the DIC should be kind of bright but no instrument pannel lights and the dimmer will have no effect on anything. If this works then IMO its working correctly, unless I have the same problem as you

Good lawwwwwd!!!... this is getting confusing! Thanks for lookin' more into this, Julian. I was thinking that what SoCal said should be true: turn the auto lights off, (which means sensor is not active), and I should be able to adjust the dimmer... but this was not the case today. Again, will respond back when I check the fuses.

Oops!.. I replied before seeing your last response. Okay, sounds like a plan! I'll do what you suggested when I get home and will get back to you as to what happened. Thanks!

Update... fuses are seated correctly. Everything you said is "bass-ackwards" in my car! When the "auto lights" are on, I have no control over the dimmer... when the "auto lights" are off, (which puts it in the 'manual' mode), I can dim or brighten the instrument panel. Are you joshin' with da loca, Julian?

No worries..I will take a look at it tomorrow night or Sat! If there is something truly wrong with it, I will have my BFH to fix it. (Big Fu*&^ng Hammer!)

You might want to take a look at the following GM TSB and maybe print a copy for your dealer if it applies...
