Update... just called the dealer to cancel Monday's appointment. I spoke to a tech and asked him about the dimmer switch. He said that it works like this:
With "auto lights" on ON during night time - should be able to adjust dimmer.
With "auto lights" on ON during daytime - should NOT be able to adjust dimmer.
With "auto lights" on OFF (manual mode) - should be able to adjust dimmer.
This is how mine is operating right now, so no need to get anything fixed for now! *phew*

Hey, I had a similar experience on my HHR. Last week, I left work going home about 08:00 very sunny, bright, no clouds, so I had to put my shades on. No backlights. Never noticed that before. I work nights all the time soo morning travel is routine. I drove about 30 miles before the lights came on, I figured the photocell was going bad. I tried the manual setting and couldn't get the lights to brighten. They would adjust up and down, but not as bright as they normally do. Sunshades off I could see they were clearly in the night time mode. Manual setting wouldn't change it. So for several mornings I would watch to see how it reacted. This morning I noticed they stayed off(Dim) until the sun actually shined on the photocell for about 30 seconds. Then wow, there was the lights. Sunshiny morning again, but 1 hour later due to daylight savings time change. Anyway, I through my hat over the Photocell and whoosh, back to dim again after about 30 seconds again. I drove for a bit, then pulled the hat off and about 30 seconds, poof, Lights again. Guess the sun has to have a certain brightness to operate the photocell.
After reading the SB on this, I suppose I may have a small problem with when I feel I need to turn them on, but from reading this, it seems to be normal. I thought I was the only one noticing this situation, thanks for bringing it up, I guess I wasn't imagining things after all.
