I have the same system in my 2009 SS and door chimes on star and some other features run through the Head Unit or the amp. In my opinion I think I would go to a reputable Audio shop in your area and get a second opinion. I do know you can bypass the factory amp but I know of one cable you really need for that and it runs about 60 dollars, and the unit to keep your steering wheel controls. Check the other post in this forum and you will find that info. Just my opinion but i don't trust the big box stores they more times than not try to sell you more than you need especially if they realize you are not knowledgable. The head unit you are thinking about is sweet and I do believe you can bypass the amp but from what i see it does not have the same power as your factory so you might loose some volume. Please do some research I would hate to see you spend that kind of money and be disappointed. Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out.
I installed a Pioneer X950BH unit, while not the same model as yours I suspect the required hardware would be similar as would be the install procedure. I had to but what the shop called an "interface module" and that thing was nearly $100, I needed an antenna adapter since the pioneer unit used the large type of plug and the HHR uses the small one. Once I had those parts the connection went just fine as the module just allowed everything to plug in. I found that the HHR amp and rear speaker works fine with the module and the steering wheel controls also are okay too.
I found I had to cut out the rear plastic portion of the "box" the hear unit sits in as the wires that come out of the Pioneer head unit took too much room. I used a hot knife and it cut easily and is not used for any structural strength.

did you buy a adapter for steering control or did it fit right on the interface module

For GM cars and models such as the HHR they make two interface modules, one for steering wheel controls and on-star and another without their functionality. At the shop I dealt with, the owner knew which one I needed by memory!!!!
