As far as I can tell most of the affordable speakers are either 5-1/4” or 6-1/2”. If I need to do this again I’ll probably use 6-1/2” and the adaptors, and stick on some foam.

Of course the two approaches discussed here preserve the original grille. Another option is to hack out the old grille and size the hole for whatever speaker you bought, and use the ugly plastic grilles that come with them. Never considered that, would need to look at the car to see if that would introduce clearance issues.
I am keeping the modded brackets ,In case my son speakers go on his !
But I was OK with the OEM for 10 years so I am sure the 5 1/2" would have been fine !
But for less then 200$ I am happy and those brackets are a plus if going to big speakers !
As for the grill yea could have cut it out and butchered the heck out of the door,So IMO the OEM door grills are fine!
But it has been a fun project ! Now if it stops raining I'll get the fronts done :O

Glad you got it done! I just found that going with the Metra brackets was the easiest way to go, especially when replacing all four door speakers, especially with 6 1/2 speakers, which supposedly give better sound than smaller sizes that fit the hacked brackets.

Yes the METRA Brackets are the way to go IMO. I think around 25$ for all 4 ! But since I had the speakers I had to mod them out lol Now they are in the POLKS box
The POLKS do not have a lot of Bass, But that is good for me as I like more treble

For less the 200$ for kit, bracket and cones plus the install kit well worth it
