On-Star
I still want to know what happens if your service laps and your in a wreck and hit the blue button.
(I have noticed that anytime a question of legality comes up on the forum, the usual responders, run like roaches from a light. Or they don't answer at all fearing what might be used as a paper trail) People these days "knuckle" too easily.

From a legal standpoint they would be much better off having it disabled completely than allowing someone to use it and say they've been injured in an accident and tell them "sorry, you are not a subscriber, good day".
I can't imagine that scenario playing out like that. There would definitely be legal ramifications, as well as a PR nightmare.
I agree, but anytime you are in the car and press the blue button you will get someone, even if it is just an operator waiting to re-activate your account. I have no beef with On-Star and I love having it, I'm just curious of the "what if" since it is also a hands-free phone and by law all phones without service can still call 911.

I would be willing to bet that anyone who is in an accident and needs assistance that calls OnStar will get the assistance that they need from OnStar.
I would like to think that is the case, but just don't know, since this has not happened, or not been reported! I can also understand why this would not be talked about, as subscription to the service would diminsh for those customers that are only looking for that singular option. Me, I like the option to have my car shut down if its stolen, or unlock it when I lock keys in car. I have a rambunctious 2 year old and in a year or two I don't want to have an episode where he has found my keys and locked himself in the car, and I then have to plead with a laughing child to un-lock the door.
OnStar Keeping Up With the Times
GM's OnStar: There's an app for that
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors will distribute OnStar smartphone applications later this year that will allow Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac owners to do things like lock their car doors or start the engine from miles away.
The OnStar mobile application will also let users get information about their vehicles, such its fuel level, available driving range, oil level, tire pressure and other diagnostic information. It will be available on Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) iPhone as well as on some Android handsets.
This technology empowers drivers to make decisions about their travels well before they enter the vehicle, meaning their full attention can stay where it needs to be - on the road ahead," said Chris Preuss, president of GM's OnStar subsidiary, said in an announcement.
GM gave the example of someone at the airport who is plagued by doubts about whether he remembered to lock the car. Or someone attending a baseball game on a hot day who wants to start her car so that it will be cooled by the time she's ready to leave.
Currently, even in vehicles equipped with remote start, the owner must be at least within sight of the vehicle to start the car. (Vehicles equipped with OnStar can also be unlocked remotely, but the owner has to call an OnStar operator and request it.)
Other OnStar phone features, some specifically tailored to each car brand, will be announced in the next few months as marketing for the technology begins, GM said.
The phone application will also include a button that will automatically dial an OnStar operator for anything that can't be done by the mobile app, such as requesting emergency assistance.
As it currently exists, OnStar is available on nearly all Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac cars. The service allows drivers to connect with a live OnStar operator by simply pressing a blue button inside the car. It also automatically summons help in the event of a crash, and sends regular emails with vehicle diagnostic information.
OnStar currently offers its services free for one year on most GM models, and then at subscription price of about $20 to $30 a month, depending on the level of service.
The mobile application will be included in the OnStar subscription price, which is not expected to change, an OnStar spokesman said.
