I kept the stock head unit only because my wife likes the way it looks. She doesn't like the aftermarket bezel that is needed to fill the hole left from the factory. The pros to keeping the factory one is stealth. No one is going to guess you are running a system. You are able to keep all the all the chimes and steering controls working too. Cons, you have to cut the wires. I personally don't mind, but some might. Only wires I cut were the speaker wires, and switched them over to RCA. This is done by a adapter that accepts the incoming speaker wires and changes them to rca. It has output gain built into it and is adjustable from 0 to 9 watts. Most new aftermarket hu come with pre amps running at 5 watts. The adapter ran me $65.

I got the subs and mono amp installed last night too. This system hits hard. I barely have any of the gains turned up more than a quarter and that's about all my ears will hold

Sweet, can't wait to hear it. Hopefully you can give me some more tips now.

All I want to do is replace the stock sub and add an amp...

Crutchfield says there is no direct fit replacement for the factory sub. They also say there isn't a direct repacemant for the tweeters too, but I made mine fit with little effort and they make a huge difference.

I'll post pics tomorrow after I get everything together and finished.

A few people have done it here. You just have to use a spacer ring and aftermarket grill I think.

Do you have any recommendations on a sub or amp that's louder than stock, but doesn't overpower the other speakers? This is not my area of expertise.

Well, just get a sub that you like. Go to a stereo shop and listen to a few different ones. Find a amp that has a rms that matches the sub and you should be good. My eclipse amp is great, but there are other ones out there that are good too. My last was a soundstream. As far a overpowering, just don't turn your gain up to much. That is my problem with my new system, I can kill it with bass, and not be able to hear the other speakers.

i got a kicker cvr 2 ohm sub, and a rockford fosgate p300-1 amp. i spaced the woofer out 3/4 of an inch and took the stock grill out, i will have to get an aftermarket one. some people have just spaced the panel out so you can use the stock grill, but when i did it, i didnt like the bulge, so i just took the grill out. it has plenty of bass for me, i was actually surprised at how much bass it had to be honest. i should have got a 4 ohm sub, but i didnt notice when i bought off ebay, but i got a killer price, so it is what it is. i dont think i can really use the other 200 watts anyways. but the rockford amp i got is rated at 150 rms and 300 peak. but the test on it showed 237 and 428, so it was way underated.
