Various HHR Sub Installs...
its common and sounds almost as good most of the time but i would never do it just because they get in the way. the principal is the same either way but a larger magnet can block sound and add distortion on bigger speakers.
I replaced all factory sound equipment and my system consist of:
>Kenwood DPX503 head unit
>Alpine M500 pushing subs
>Alpine F300 pushing mids
>2 13.5" JL audio W1 subwoofers
>4 5.25" JL audio C2 coaxial mid-range speakers (with silk dome tweeters) in the factory door locations

If you are referring to the factory sub location, the answer is yes. Many others, including myself, have tried to work with that spot. Some have fiberglassed the inside to seal it, while others like me tried sealing it with Dynamat and fiberglass insulation. I tried a variety of speakers, including freeair, without good results. I ultimately put a hinged door and made it into a storage bin. Then I built a small .5 cu ft box that hugs the drivers side passenger seat and still allows the compartment on the floor open. I could never compromise the trunk area by filling it with massive sub enclosures.
Some great looking installs here.
Wasn't able to go through every post as there is quite a bit.
Does anyone have info on the dimensions of the space where the stock sub is located? Want an idea of what I have to work with. For anyone who installed an 8" in there, do you think there is room for a 10" shallow mount sub with a custom fiberglass box?
I want to add some bass but I want it to look as stock as possible. I need all of my cargo space at times and I don't wan to have to deal with taking a box in and out. A nice full sound is more important to me than being heard from blocks away so maybe an 8" is enough.
