XM Radio Upgrade Questions

I apologize if these questions have already been answered. I am an audio amateur, so please be patient with me.

I am the proud owner of a 2008 SS with the upgraded stereo/6 disc cd changer (non XM). Is it possible to simply replace the radio head unit and install a factory GM unit that will work with XM? Is the XM antenna already installed, or do I have to have that installed as well?

I am currently a Sirius subscriber, and now that XM and Sirius are the same, I'd like to ditch my plug and play Sirius receiver.

Thank you in advance for your input.

XM upgrade is part number 17800594. We charge $225for the part or $345 installed. Must have an XM ready radio.

So I heard back from my dealer who stated that to replace the radio it would run about $1000.00 - in fact, their email to me even recommended that I go to a store like Best Buy, as I would have to rewire the entire stereo system.

I detailed to them that I had the upgraded stereo with the 6 cd changer. I mentioned that I had an HHR SS, but I neglected to tell them that I had OnStar, as I thought that it was standard.

So I guess the real question is whether the XM antenna is actually installed. I have OnStar and the upgraded (non XM) stereo system.

Thank you.

Your radio should be XM ready unless they changed something, I have an 06 and my radio is XM ready. As far as I understand it the Onstar antenna will need to be switched with an Onstar/XM antenna which should be included in the kit from GM. Here is a thread where someone had the kit installed. https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/audio-video-17/xm-installed-17272/
