ABS control valve / module
Ok, update on this. New parts installed - electronic side instantly threw a code for a faulty steering position sensor. Took that out, replaced it with the old electronic module, now the hydraulic module is throwing a code for something else and the system can't be bled because of that code. WTF is up with GM? The odds of both modules being faulty are next to nil. What possibly does the braking system have to do with a steering sensor? I just don't get it...
Working on trying to bypass the code on the hydraulic side or just putting the old system back in completely and living with a faulty ABS pedal...

The GM tech was there to program the modules(s). The control module threw the code about the steering position sensor and he couldn't work around it. So my mechanic took that module off, put the old one on and is now getting another code from the modulator valve. I'm stopping in tomorrow to see what's going on.
Sounds like you got a tech that has forgotten how to use a Tech2. The EBCM is a computer that needs firmware to be installed. The steering Position sensor should be a "follow the directions on the screen" kind of thing, unless the SS module wants a SS steering position sensor.
Not a 1957 Chevy.

Maybe. The control module I bought was for the LT/LS; the modulator was for the SS. I suppose it's possible those two don't play well together, but the control module was supposed to be "universal" between the LT/LS and the SS according to 4 GM retailers I researched.
Right? But three of the top GM retailers had the same part numbers as interchangeable for the electronic side. Only one had the hydraulic side as specific for the SS. Such a mess...
