Sounds like the intermediate shaft to me too, but to be safe check that corner out for any play in the hub or strut mount, etc.

Wait a minute! Look down at the sway bar near the bushings, I'll bet that you will see a clean spot where the bar moves L/R when the steering wheel is turned. Then watch as your helper turns the wheel back and forth. I do not know if this is a sign of worn out bushings or not, but I am willing to put a pint of homebrewed ale that most of the "clunks" can be traced back to this. Btw, I think the parts are under $20, I have not been interested enuff to fix it yet, so not sure. It is only 4 bolts, but I'm betting the engineers responsible for making easy jobs a PITA were at work on this one.

Not sure, but the Auto parts places do stock the type of parts, just be aware that there are several different diameters of sway bars on HHRs, and I would not trust the "book". Meaning take the old part with you.

I have not done much investigating, since I narrowed it down to a non-life threatening cause, just casual parts shopping. I think the "Performance" parts go for around $20 each, and the rubber bushing alone should be around $10 each. But again, don't take my uninformed word for anything.
