That piece would be a balance bar, it evens out the pull in the rear brake cables, tomato, tomatoe.
You still could get a replacement.

The red line was and indicator where to place a stop. If it needs to be shorter cut the cable braze/solder a new stop stop in the right position.

For reference, this is a picture of the one I got from the junkyard. Our HHR adjustment screw is threaded down to about the width of one of the spaces on the page, but the cable overall is approximately the same length. The pictures of then revised cables seem to have much more adjustment, much like ours.

If you need more threads then less cable on the other end. shorter cable = longer thread

Or you could get a generic cable of a close length and modify it to length. Yes, generic parking brake cables are sold.

Dave, I just saw your reply. For some reason, I hadn't been getting emails when someone replys to my posts. Do you still have the part? I don't wanna take it for free, lemme give you atleast 5 bucks + shipping. Thanks for your generosity. Scott

Just an update in case anyone has this problem in the future: I found that the root of my problem was a seized parking brake mechanism in at least one rear caliper. It eventually effected both the front and rear cables. I'm waiting on rotors and pads to diagnose the other side, as advance auto's brake pads decided to self destruct , chewing up the rotor. There were no heat cracks, so it wasn't the caliper's fault. I'm going back to bosch brake pads for price/performance ratio. On the plus side, the rear cables on our cars couldn't be easier to change!

Did I miss something? This is the first mention that a) this is an SS and b) disc rear brakes.

The reason the 2006 cable did not fit is that the 2006 did not have discs in the rear because there was no SS in 2006.

I guess I wrongly "assumed" that all front cables were the same and the rearward components shouldn't matter. That's what I get for assuming lol

I did get a front cable from an unspecified HHR at a local wrecking yard and it fit like a glove.
