I've never done it, but am under the impression that It's a slide hammer job. I'll try to check soon.

My 2006 Service Manual makes no mention of removing the shaft from the rack & pinion assembly, just how to lube it.

The factory Manual won't show how to replace the inner tie rod because gm don't offer the inner without buying the complete rack and pinon.

With the tool it should be easy but sometimes it takes a bit of force to brake them loose because they use lock tight on the treads.

The book says to cut the clamp and pull the boot outwards, then apply grease to the inside of the boot, apply new clamp.

To replace the inner tie rod end you have to remove the boot that covers it. There is a special tool made to slip over the tie rod and you have to disconnect the outer tie rod to get the tool on.

I bought the tool from Harbor Freight to do mine.

http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog...r+tie+rod+tool

for a specialty tool its pretty cheap.

You can actually see the nut you need to turn from under the car once the boot is removed but I didn't have enough room to actually swing the wrench to be able to undo it so I got the special tool.

I was able to re use the boot using a zip tie.

I bought the inner tie rods from Autozone.

Exactly what Grizzly said. I did mine a few months back using the HF tool and an air impact. They came right off.
