has anyone tried cutting the stock springs to level the car? I've done that a few times with older larger cars and was wondering "why not this one too?"

Due to the way the HHR springs are wound, variable diameter and coil spacing, they are absolutely not suited to cutting to lower. If you just want to level the car, Gold-Line has a pair for the rear for just that.

About the only coils that this can be done on are ones that are "straight wound", with the coils open on the end (not flattened) and consistent spacing.

Wow.. those springs look more effective than I thought they would be.. I might just have to get some of those. I would like to lower it completely, but roads are real bad around here. We even have bridges collapsing

Never a good idea. Rarely can you get away with it. You kill the spring rate, even if you cut the right way. One of the things it's better to do right the first time.

Stock 17 Wheels

After-Market 17 Wheels:

I love the look, Street Rod'ish and enjoy it this way.

There is a noticeable ride quality change, ESPECIALLY if you carry 4 adults or much weight often. I use for primarily for commutting, and it rides fine with just me, most of the miles is how I use vehicle, without much weight.

I did have some Rear Tire-Fender Rub, more notice-able with the after-market wheels. I had to modify, the inside lip of fender, some have rolled, I cut-back the lip some, Now NO Tire Rub issues.

Hope that helps!!!

Those are nice wheels! Are they American Racing or? Whats the backspace, etc? Thanks

Some questions from a new guy here.
- Are the springs the only component required to lower an HHR?
- How many different height options are there? I'd like more than just leveling, but I don't want it super slammed either.

Thanks.
