Poor turning circle
Poor turning circle
Just wondering if anyone else think our cars should have tighter turning radius. I have 3 other cars which will do a much tighter U turn than my. 2008 SS. My 2010 Ford Flex, My 2014Ford Explorer, My daughter’s 2007 Ford Mustang all make a much sharper U turn. Any thoughts or solutions? I always thought smaller cars would turn tighter than larger cars. Did GM Dave some money and not engineer a tight turning circle?
The turning circle is wide.
In the HHR's case the wide turning circle goes with the territory. The hood slopes down and the fenders narrow the nose and engine compartment. It has a transverse mounted engine driving the front wheels.with a beefy transmission and drive. The turning radius is baked into the design. I really like the unique design. It's what first attracted me to the HHR. I still like it every time I see it.
Compensating for the turning radius, the HHR has some big rig truck-like characteristics that I've grown to appreciate. The very low eyebrow out the front focuses awareness on the road and what's in front of me -- rather than sky. It noticeably reduces glare. The high belt line and the small windows keep the car very cool in hot sun, and the car interior stays warm and comfortable in cold weather. The AC function cools down the interior fast and the heater warms it up inside very quickly. The small windows make the car feel very private. Much better than driver and passengers riding in a goldfish bowl.
I logged many many miles in big trucks. Driving the HHR has some of the best attributes of over-the-road tractors. The design supports long stints on the road. It may not be the most agile parking lot and city car.
I love it on thousand mile road trips.
